After catching a marlin, the bill is cut off and exposed to seawater to remove the flesh. Then, it is soaked in oil for about six months. Once the smell is gone, the rough surface is shaved off and polished with sandpaper to achieve a beautiful, ivory-like transparency. Tying the base part with nylon cord helps maintain its strength.
